Pay Duty for Oversea Proxy Purchases

with one comment

Since today, domestic customs will begin levying duty on imported postal items priced as low as 50 RMB. Before, only goods priced above 400 RMB from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, or 500 RMB from other places would be charged tax.

As imported cosmetics in China are much expensive than that in US and concerning about the milk safety, proxy purchase of milk formula and cosmetics from overseas is very popular in the city of China.

The new rule taking effect today will increase the proxy purchases price from overseas, and many online sellers are going to raise their prices. A formula seller said he had already hoarded hundreds of cans of milk powder and will raise the price when the policy comes into effect.

Meanwhile, some sellers have found novel ways to avoid duty by hiring airline crew to purchase duty-free goods at airports in foreign countries and bring them back as personal items in their luggage, because that the policy only targets mailed items and does not cover personal  items carried by airline crew.

Why people in Mainland China prefer to buy milk powder abroad? It is all about the milk quality in China can not be guaranteed. Poisonous milk powder has been exposed in recent years. I don’t think people like the troubles to buy these kinds of goods from overseas if the food quality can be controlled well.

It is time to take actions on food quality control, not just charge tax for oversea proxy purchases.
