The Salary Threshold for the Individual Income Tax Increases

Starting from September 2011, the salary threshold for the individual income tax will be increased to 3500 RMB. The current threshold is 2000 RMB.

The resolution was passed yesterday by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. Along with the increasing of the threshold, the first level of the progressive rate will also be decreased from 5% to 3%.

The Chinese Finance Ministry says that, after the regulation, the total tax payers in China will be decreased sharply from 84 million to about 24 million, which means that only 7.7% of all working class will pay the personal income tax. Read full story…

Motivation of Job Hopping

Comparing to US and European, employees in China change their jobs much more frequent. I see several employees have been working in our company for about 20 years, almost since the company founded. Of course, these people work in US. In our Shanghai site, people that have served for 5 years are with a small ratio. Why employees in China hop jobs so frequently? What’s the motivation?

The starting salary for new graduate is small and the salary increases slowly. Many graduates get 3,000 to 5,000 RMB monthly wage and it is relatively lucky to have an increase of 10% year to year. The increase percentage is very big in US, but it is small in China because the product price increases sharply and the starting salary is much lower.

Mid-Autumn Gifts in China

Mid-Autumn festival will soon come around. Many Companies in China do not want to miss the opportunity to please their staff, and will give employees more or less festival gifts in this  traditional Chinese festival day.

The reception area of our office building is overflowing with boxes of mooncakes these days. And it is said that every staff member  will get a box of mooncake this year.

Shanghai Plans to Attract More Foreign Professionals

Shanghai has issued a new set of guidelines aiming to strengthen services, possibly offer subsidies and other inducements, and improve living environment.

According to a survey, professionals and industry experts concern about the high tax rates, a rising cost of living and a lack of a mature medical system in Shanghai, which may reduce the city’s attraction for professionals from the rest of China and abroad.
