About
This season opens with Indian Women Who Changed History, in memory of Noor Inayat Khan, daughter of the Sufi teacher Hazrat Inayat Khan, whose family traced its lineage to Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore, and his American wife, Ora Ray Baker. Noor was born in Moscow and raised in London and Paris, trained from childhood in Hindustani classical music. Her biographer Shrabani Basu titled her life story Spy Princess, and the name endures as a tribute to a woman born into nobility who chose a far harder inheritance.
She became one of the Second World War's most remarkable intelligence agents, carrying an unyielding moral clarity into the fight against tyranny. As the last SOE wireless operator left standing in occupied Paris, she evaded Nazi capture for months, transmitting vital intelligence from deep within enemy territory.
Captured by the Gestapo, her spirit remained unbroken to the end.
