Mahalaya marks the threshold of Durga Puja, the hour when anticipation gives way to the arrival of the Goddess. For generations, the early morning sound of Mahishasura Mardini, the voices of Agomoni songs, the ringing of bells and the first preparations for Puja have ushered in the festive season. Yet Mahalaya lives beyond ritual. It is held in memory, in sound, and in a quiet sense of belonging.
For Bengali families living away from Bengal, it carries one more meaning. It becomes a way of remembering home. Nowhere in Delhi is this felt more vividly than in Chittaranjan Park, a neighbourhood where the traditions of Bengal were carried across geography and imagined anew within the city.
