Delhi has been ruled from the throne by only one woman, Razia Sultan, Sultanat Ki Mallika, who in the 13th century became the first and only female Sultan of Hindustan, bestowed the title Lashkar-kash, Commander of Armies, by historian Juzjani. But the story of women who shaped this city does not end with her throne. Three centuries later, within the very gardens we gather in today, a different kind of power took root, the power of Mughal empresses, sisters and daughters who never sat on a throne, yet built monuments, minted coins, issued farmans, and decided the fate of empires.
We meet Bega Begum, the widow who stood on this ground and commissioned Humayun's Tomb, not merely a resting place for a fallen emperor, but a declaration of one woman's vision, patience and grief, translated into red sandstone and white marble, and the monument that would later inspire the Taj…
