Nigaar-khaana, a gallery, a house of portraits.
Urdu Bazar Baithak is a Sunday morning breakfast club, curated by cultural impresario Abu Sufiyan Khan and built around conversation, literature and tehzeeb. It is a rooftop near Jama Masjid where Dilli sits together over chai and a proper nashta.
This morning we see three Dillis through three voices. Rajinder Arora shows us the Dilli of the streets, its artisans, rickshaw pullers and rehdi-patri walas. Mahtab Alam opens the Dilli of letters, the story of a university press that shaped modern Urdu. Ashar Haque closes with the Dilli of qissagoi, wit and waz'adaari, a world that now lives largely in memory.
Abu Sufiyan Khan curates them all into one morning, one table, one conversation.
In Urdu, nigaar means a portrait and khaana means a house. A Nigaar-khaana is a house of pictures, the gallery where a painter's portraits are kept.…
