About this event
We open Urdu Bazar Baithak with Dr Rakhshanda Jalil on Liking Progress, Loving Change: A Literary History of the Progressive Writers' Movement in Urdu, in conversation with Dr Haris Qadeer.
The taraqqi pasand tehreek gave Urdu some of its most-read writers, and gave twentieth-century Indian literature much of its political conscience. Dr Jalil's study of it, published by Oxford University Press, does not begin where most accounts of the movement begin. Not with the first All India Progressive Writers’ Conference of 1936, nor with Angarey in 1932, but earlier, tracing the emergence of political and social consciousness in Urdu writing from the mid-nineteenth century.
